The 8-week Cross Country Conquest has been a rousing success and lots of fun! Seventy-four people crossed the starting line and worked their way west. Sixteen motivated exercisers (out or 74 participants) made it all the way to San Diego. These people walked more than 235,700 steps or 2357 minutes.

An additional 21 people hiked at least to the half-way point at Abilene, Texas. Kudos to all who participated, so matter how far you walked! I am so proud of those who accepted the challenge to positively affect health and fitness. Some initially thought that they would do so poorly that it wasn’t worth the effort. I am happy to say that most all of these people went much farther than they believed possible. Each person who added walking or using the LifeTrail Stations to their activity routine is a winner in my book! You are taking steps to keep strong, agile, healthy, and independent. Good for you!

I had reports that physicians were gleeful when they were told about the contest. I heard that some lab reports came back showing marked improvement during this walking program. Many people spoke to me about the enjoyment of walking and the meditative effect. Some mentioned being less stiff in the joints and having more energy. Residents are already referring to this contest as “The First Annual Cross Country Conquest.” Our staff has been asking about having a cross country walk of their own. – Denise J. Heimlich, M.S.
